“The new is in the old concealed; the old is in the new revealed.” (St. Augustine)
The Bible is filled with patterns, types, and shadows of things to come. Unlike any other book, the nuggets of truth that can be mined from each of its pages are inexhaustible.
One fascinating pattern that emerges within the first book of the Bible (Genesis) is found in the life and times of Joseph, the son of Jacob (Israel). Joseph’s betrayal, false arrest/trial, condemnation, and later exaltation to the highest level of government is a type or shadow of the man Jesus Christ in the New Testament.
Over the years, many dispensational patterns of Joseph as a type of Jesus have been recognized and recorded in various works.
This video presents just a small fraction of the patterns between the patriarch Joseph and our God and Savior Jesus Christ. (Some of these were compiled by a friend in ministry and former colleague, the late Chuck Missler. See his website at https://khouse.org.)
The Joseph-Jesus Pattern – Slideshow Presentation
Below is a visual comparison chart of some of the similarities between Joseph and Jesus… or as we call it The Joseph-Jesus Pattern.
DISPENSATIONAL PATTERNS OF JOSEPH AS A MODEL OF JESUS
The Life of Joseph | The Life of Jesus |
Betrayed by his Jewish brothers into the hands of Gentiles & God turned the betrayal around for all Israel and all the world to be saved | Betrayed by his Jewish brothers into the hands of Gentiles & God turned the betrayal around for all Israel and all the world to be saved |
Joseph was betrayed by his brother Yehuda(Judah) for twenty pieces of silver. | Jesus, the son of Joseph, was also betrayed specifically by Yehuda (Judas) for thirty pieces of silver. |
Condemned with two criminals – one of whom lived while the other died. | Condemned with two criminals – one of whom lived while the other died. |
Upon his exaltation, Joseph took a Gentile bride. | As does Jesus as the Bridegroom. |
Joseph was not recognized by his Jewish brothers at his first coming, but at the second they wept over him. | Jesus was not recognized by His Jewish brothers at His First Coming, but at the Second they, too, shall weep. |
Joseph was beloved of his father | Jesus is beloved of the Father |
Joseph was falsely accused at an unfair trial. | Jesus was falsely accused at an unfair trial. |
Joseph’s cloak was taken as proof that he was no longer in the pit. | Jesus’ burial cloak was taken as proof that He was no longer in the tomb. |

More about the book of Genesis…
The Torah is filled with types, antitypes, and shadows of things to come.
Genesis is the first of the five books of the Torah. It is where we encounter the incredible story of one particular son of Jacob. (Namely, Joseph, whom this video is about.)
The word “Genesis” is the English translation of the Hebrew word, “Bereshit,” meaning “In the beginning.”
Jews and Christians both find their ancestry in the patriarchs of faith: Abraham, Isaac, Jacob. The book of Genesis, then, reveals a spiritual ancestry.
To be “in Christ” is to be the spiritual heir to the promises made to Abraham and his descendants.
The blessed Apostle Paul tells us as much in his letter to the church in ancient Galatia:
“And if ye be Christ’s, then are ye Abraham’s seed, and heirs according to the promise.” (Galatians 3:29 KJV)
And the beloved Paul expounds upon this profound truth again to the church of Rome when he explains:
“This means that it is not the children of the flesh who are the children of God, but the children of the promise are counted as offspring.” (Romans 9:8)
When we identify with the Second Adam, Jesus Christ, we are “grafted in” to the promises made to Abraham and his descendants through a New Covenant. No longer are we alienated from being sons of God because of Christ’s atoning work on the cross.
Be blessed and remember your Creator.
