“I believe in God the Father almighty, creator of heaven and earth. I believe in Jesus Christ, his only Son, our Lord… I believe in the Holy Spirit.” (The Apostle’s Creed)
God is one. (Deuteronomy 6:4-6)
However, the one true God is revealed in three distinct Persons: God the Father, God the Son, and God the Holy Spirit.
These three Persons are not three Gods. Instead, the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit are all one and the same God.
The being of each Person is equal to the whole being of God.
All of God’s attributes and characteristics are true of each Person as each are fully God.
The triune nature of God is a mystery, which transcends the bounds of natural human reason and requires supernatural faith to apprehend. Therefore, the revealed nature of God mystifies the natural man who cannot perceive the things of the Spirit.
“The natural person does not accept the things of the Spirit of God, for they are folly to him, and he is not able to understand them because they are spiritually discerned.” (1 Corinthians 2:14)
The Godhead, as portrayed in the Bible, defies explanation and even human logic. Natural man cannot perceive God’s nature because he considers it foolishness. Those who lack faith can neither see nor hear the truth. Let us pray that the Spirit of God would enlighten the eyes of the unbelieving so they can see His glorious truth.
Ask God for wisdom and He will provide it. But ask in faith, not doubting.
Let us now consider each Person of the Godhead according to the Bible.
“The grace of the Lord Jesus Christ and the love of God and the fellowship of the Holy Spirit be with you all.” (2 Corinthians 13:14)
God the Father
God is the Father of all creation.
“In the beginning, God created the heavens and the earth.” (Genesis 1:1)
“Have we not all one Father? Has not one God created us?” (Malachi 2:10)
God the Father is the only Savior of mankind.
“I, I am the LORD, and besides me there is no savior.” (Isaiah 43:11)
“For I am the LORD your God, the Holy One of Israel, your Savior.” (Isaiah 43:3)
“And there is no other god besides me, a righteous God and a Savior; there is none besides me.” (Isaiah 45:21)
God the Father is “the First and the Last.”
“Thus says the LORD, the King of Israel and his Redeemer, the LORD of hosts: “I am the first and I am the last; besides me there is no god.” (Isaiah 44:6)
God the Son
The man Jesus Christ is God the Son. And as such, He is fully God.
Jesus Christ is the Word of God through whom all things in heaven and earth were made. The Word of God was with God from the beginning and is God Himself.
“In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. He was in the beginning with God. All things were made through him, and without him was not any thing made that was made.” (John 1:1)
Jesus Christ is the God and Savior of mankind.
“Waiting for our blessed hope, the appearing of the glory of our great God and Savior Jesus Christ.” (Titus 2:13)
“Simeon Peter, a servant and apostle of Jesus Christ, To those who have obtained a faith of equal standing with ours by the righteousness of our God and Savior Jesus Christ.” (2 Peter 1:1)
“She will bear a son, and you shall call his name Jesus, for he will save his people from their sins.” (Matthew 1:21)
“For unto you is born this day in the city of David a Savior, who is Christ the Lord.” (Luke 2:11)
Jesus Christ, the Son of promise, bears the name “Mighty God” and “Everlasting Father.”
“For to us a child is born, to us a son is given; and the government shall be upon his shoulder, and his name shall be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace.” (Isaiah 9:6)
Jesus Christ (God the Son) serves as the connection point (“mediator”) between God the Father and sinful mankind.
“For there is one God, and there is one mediator between God and men, the man Christ Jesus.” (1 Timothy 2:5)
God’s eternal plan of salvation for sinful man is made available only through the atoning sacrificial death of God the Son, Jesus Christ.
“And there is salvation in no one else, for there is no other name under heaven given among men by which we must be saved.” (Acts 4:12)
God the Holy Spirit
The Holy Spirit of God is fully God.
Those who believe in Christ are to be baptized in the name of the Holy Spirit.
“Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit.” (Matthew 28:19)
Lying to the Holy Spirit is the same thing as lying to God (because the Holy Spirit is God).
“But Peter said, “Ananias, why has Satan filled your heart to lie to the Holy Spirit and to keep back for yourself part of the proceeds of the land? While it remained unsold, did it not remain your own? And after it was sold, was it not at your disposal? Why is it that you have contrived this deed in your heart? You have not lied to man but to God.” (Acts 5:3,4)
The Holy Spirit of God is omnipresent, which is only a characteristic of God Himself.
“Where shall I go from your Spirit? Or where shall I flee from your presence? If I ascend to heaven, you are there! If I make my bed in Sheol, you are there!” (Psalm 139:7,8)
The Holy Spirit of God knows the very thoughts of God.
“These things God has revealed to us through the Spirit. For the Spirit searches everything, even the depths of God. For who knows a person’s thoughts except the spirit of that person, which is in him? So also no one comprehends the thoughts of God except the Spirit of God.” (1 Corinthians 2:10,11)
No man can enter God’s Kingdom unless he is born of the Holy Spirit of God.
“Jesus answered, “Truly, truly, I say to you, unless one is born of water and the Spirit, he cannot enter the kingdom of God.” (John 3:5)
